California Pacific Coast Highway Secrets

California Travel Hwy 1, have you been there?

Here is a little taste of what you will see when you drive this magnificent highway

California Highway 1 hugs the scenic Pacific coast from south of Los Angeles to about 200 miles north of San Francisco.

This has to be one of the prettiest places I have seen in the world so far, my husband and I drove it with our kids and stop to see the waterfalls cascading and the elephant seals on their birthing beaches

The Pacific Coast Highway has been featured by National Geographic as one of the worlds greatest driving tours

It is a twisting cliff hugging 123 mile route along the central California coast that takes about five hours to complete at a leisurely pace it is among the nations most scenic Highway’s. The route starts in historic Monterey and threads through the mountains that plunge into the Pacific

There are many beach towns along the way and the interesting thing is the drive through the mountains also features little mountain towns, and when you get into the hills the wine vineyards and their many states. There are over 250 species of birds and mammals including the Blacktail deer gray foxes sea otters and see lions

You can also see migrating gray whales pass from December through April of each year

We went through the Pacific Coast Highway in January just in time to stop and see all the elephant seals birthing their calves and relaxing on the beaches

We stopped along one of the scenic pull off’s and walk down to the beach for a picnic views were just amazing

I would definitely recommend this spot for anyone looking for amazing natural beauty here in the USA, I plan to be back there soon to spend more time exploring the area.

Dream… Plan… Accomplish and Hit the Road 🙂

  1. Thank you for the beautiful pictures and video. Monterey CA is one of my favorite places to visit.

  2. This is very interesting. I’ve never been to California or seen the ocean. Me and my kids are moving to Florida in June but my brother is moving to Cali. Maybe I can use that an excuse to see the West coast 😉

    • Shauna Florida is awesome too… where are you headed to? But California is just different because of the temperature and the many scenic differences as you travel along… you will love it when you get there.

  7. Oh man, I love the Coast Highway! One of these days, I want to drive the entire length in a convertible Corvette (or insert another fun sports car), hang out in all of the quirky beach towns, hit up some B&Bs along the way, and just spend a bunch of time enjoying the ride. 🙂 Thanks for this reminder, glad you guys had fun!

    • John absolutely! We had a blast in our 3 series BMW- the drive was just second to none so far 🙂 Look forward to hearing how your visit to this amazing jem in California goes!
